Pour cette gravure sur bois, je me suis inspirée de la célèbre Peinture noire de Goya, “Saturno devorando a un hijo”, où Kronos, le roi des Titans, dévore ses enfants pour empêcher la réalisation d'une prophétie annonçant sa chute par leurs mains. Ce symbole puissant sert de réflexion contemporaine sur la nature cyclique du pouvoir et le passage inévitable du temps.
En m’inspirant de l'approche allégorique de Goya, où Kronos symbolise l'État espagnol consommant sa jeunesse à travers les guerres et les révolutions, j'ai cherché à m’approprier et à réinterpréter ce thème dans un contexte contemporain. L'acte de Kronos dévorant sa progéniture est subtilement évoqué, sa main se tenant près de sa bouche, suggérant l’acte sans le représenter pleinement.
Kronos se dresse en surplomb des nuages éthérés et des icebergs flottants, traduisant la fragilité et l'impermanence du pouvoir. Derrière la figure divine, une représentation stellaire évoque le royaume cosmique de Saturne*, soulignant la nature intemporelle du récit.
Avec Kronos, j'invite les spectateurs à méditer sur les thèmes intemporels du pouvoir, de l'oppression et de la nature cyclique de l'histoire. L'œuvre est un rappel poignant de la lutte permanente contre l'autoritarisme et de l'importance de préserver la vitalité et le potentiel de la jeunesse.
*Saturne est l'équivalent romain de Kronos.

For this woodcut, I drew inspiration from Goya’s famous Black Painting, “Saturno devorando a un hijo”, a remarkable portrayal of Kronos, the king of Titans, devouring his children to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy foretelling his downfall at their hands. This powerful symbol serves as a contemporary reflection on the cyclical nature of power and the unavoidable passage of time.
Drawing from Goya's allegorical approach, in which Kronos symbolizes the Spanish state consuming its youth through wars and revolution, I sought to appropriate and reinterpret this theme in a contemporary context. The act of Kronos devouring his offspring is subtly evoked, with his hand held close to his mouth, suggesting the act without fully depicting it.
Kronos towers above ethereal clouds and floating icebergs, conveying the fragility and impermanence of power. Behind the divine figure, a stellar representation evokes the cosmic realm of Saturn*, further emphasizing the timeless nature of the narrative.
With Kronos, I invite viewers to contemplate the timeless themes of power, oppression, and the cyclical nature of history. The artwork serves as a reminder of the ever-present struggle against authoritarianism and the importance of preserving the vitality and potential of youth.
*Saturn is the Roman equivalent for Kronos.
